Here’s a recipe that you will definitely enjoy homemade sloppy joes. This is so simple and quick to make it takes just a few ingredients and is ready in 30 minutes.

Making your own sloppy joes instead of using the can, gives you control over the ingredients. You can add in more peppers and onions or use less. You can control the sweetness of this recipe as well.

The only preparation that is needed for this is to cut the green peppers and onions. The rest is just measuring out the remaining ingredients. The ingredients are simple mustard, ketchup, brown sugar, and spices. It can’t get any simpler than that.

You can choose any side to accompany this dish. We choose to keep it super simple with chips.

  • 1 pan

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 2 green peppers 3 depending on size
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp mustard
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 3 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp salt or to taste
  • 1/2 tsp pepper or to taste
  • 1 pk hamburger buns

Instructions

  • Start by cutting the green peppers and onion into bit size pieces and set aside.
    In large pan add in the ground beef and cook on medium heat. When ground beef is half way done add in the seasonings and give it a good mix. Once ground beef is cooked add in the green peppers and onion and mix them in well. Put a lid on and let it cook with lid for about 15 minutes until green pepper and onion are tender.
    Then add in the remaining ingredients and stir well. Making sure that the meat and vegetables are coated. Once done dinner is ready

I did take the time to see how sloppy joes came to be. What I found out was back in the 1930’s the theory was a cafe in Iowa served loose meat sandwiches. Joe the cook decided to add some tomato sauce to the sandwich which changed everything. This with the sandwich already being messy the name came to be sloppy joes.
